Bernard (Bernie) Wonder has been appointed as a part-time Associate Commissioner to assist with the Commission's study - Business Regulation Benchmarking: Role of Local Government.

Bernie was the Head of Office at the Productivity Commission from 2005-2010, with responsibility for the overall management of the professional and administrative resources of the Commission in delivering its program of advice on economic, social and environmental issues.

Prior to joining the Commission, Bernie was Deputy Secretary at the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and is a former Executive Director of the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE).

Bernie has participated in and contributed to various government initiatives, particularly in the areas of rural policy, agricultural trade, research and development, productivity and natural resource management. He has also worked on agricultural cooperation with China and Indonesia - as well as leading Australian delegations to the Food and Agricultural Organisation and the European Commission.

Bernie holds degrees from the University of New South Wales and the Australian National University - and has completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University. Bernie was awarded the Public Service Medal in 2004 for outstanding public service, particularly for the development and implementation of the 'Agriculture - Advancing Australia' initiative and the National Action Plan on Salinity and Water Quality.
