Judith Sloan commenced as half-time Commissioner of the Productivity Commission in April 1998. She is also Commissioner of The Australian Fair Pay Commission and a Director of Santos Ltd.
Judith holds a first class Honours degree in Economics from the University of Melbourne, a Master of Arts degree in Economics, specialising in Industrial Relations, also from the University of Melbourne, and a Master of Science degree in Economics from the London School of Economics.
Judith has held appointments at the University of Melbourne and at Flinders University of South Australia. She held the position of Director of the National Institute of Labour Studies from 1992 to 1998. She was appointed as Professor of Labour Studies in 1989.
She has published widely in books and journals and her areas of interest include industrial relations, labour markets, training and migration. She has been a regular columnist for both The Australian Financial Review and The Australian.
Her previous appointments include:
- Deputy Chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Commission
- Director of Mayne Group Limited
- South Australian Ports Corporation Board
- Member of the South Australian Council of TAFE
- Trade Development Council
- Textiles, Clothing and Footwear Development Authority
- Australian Statistics Advisory Council.
In her work at the Productivity Commission she has been involved in a number of inquiries including:

- Review of Legislation Regulating the Architectural Profession
- Cost Recovery of Government Agencies
- Independent Review of the Job Network
- National Workers’ Compensation and Occupational Health and Safety Frameworks
- 2004 Review of Part X of the Trade Practices Act 1974: International Liner Cargo Shipping
- The Impact of Migration and Population Growth on Productivity Growth in the Australian Economy.
She is currently working on the commissioned research study Review of Mutual Recognition Schemes.
