Graduate Employment

Training and Development

As the Australian Government’s principal review and advisory body on microeconomic policy and regulation, the Commission is committed to ensuring that its staff remain at the forefront of applied research in microeconomic policy and regulation.

To enhance the professional development of our staff, and to contribute successfully to the demanding and varied work of the Commission, we offer:

  • an induction program for all new graduates
  • ongoing development opportunities to all staff through Individual Development Plans.

Graduate induction program

Early in your first year, you will attend a week-long training course in our Melbourne office, and a further week will be conducted in our Canberra office later in the year.

The training courses will cover a range of issues such as:

  • orientation to the Commission
  • introduction to other Commission staff in work and social environments
  • computer training (including advanced spreadsheets, presentation packages, and word processing)
  • writing course to help consolidate and improve your writing skills
  • team skills, planning, presentation skills and project management.

Ongoing professional development

The Commission encourages its staff to take up opportunities to develop their professional skills. Through the use of Individual Development Plans, we identify for every individual their respective training and professional development needs. Staff can gain professional development by:

  • Further education at university — the Commission has policies to support staff who want to continue studying while working at the Commission. Many junior staff have used this opportunity to complete honours, combined degrees or undertake Masters degrees while at the Commission
  • In-house training — the Commission provides specialist training and workshops on a variety of topics
  • Seminars and conferences — The Commission encourages staff to attend seminars and conferences
  • On-the-job training — The Commission recognises the importance of on-the-job training and invests considerable resources helping staff develop their skills while at work.
