Better evaluation to strengthen evidence-based policy

Supporting research project

Background

There is generally broad support for governments to base policy decisions on sound evidence and to periodically review policy to ensure it is delivering real improvements for the community. Yet, evaluation is often not built in to policy design and funding, and is subsequently poorly executed.

Objectives of the study

This study will examine the challenges and obstacles to improving policy evaluation by governments with a view to identifying both 'best practice' methods and effective institutional arrangements to support rigorous policy evaluation.

Timing

The study will be completed by the end of February 2009.
