Theory and evidence of skill shortages in Australia

Research Project

Background

Skill shortages have been of increasing concern to industry since the mid-1990s. In a recent business survey, the 'availability of suitably qualified employees' was identified as the major determinant of future investment decisions. Also, in the Commission's 2006 research consultations with government and community groups, the issue of skill shortages was raised as an important area for research.

While much has been written about skill shortages in Australia, there is scope for more independent, rigorous analysis. The aim of this project is to synthesise, within an economic framework, current theory and evidence on skill shortages in Australia.

Objectives of the Study

To synthesise theory and evidence on skill shortages in Australia.
