Interactions between trade and employment in Australia
Supporting research project
Background
The Commission is contributing to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) 'International Collaborative Initiative on Trade and Employment (ICITE) - The Contribution of Open Markets to Sustainable Growth and Employment'. The initiative includes the production of thematic papers, country studies, and presentations at regional forums and at the annual OECD Global Forum on Trade.
The Commission has been asked to contribute a study on the links between Australian trade and employment.
Objectives of the study
The objective of the ICITE is to understand better the mechanisms by which trade interacts with employment, with a view to promoting dialogue and developing policy-relevant conclusions. The objective of the Commission's contribution is to explain the effect of Australia's trade liberalisation and the recent improvements in the Australian terms of trade on the structure of employment and the overall demand for labour.
