Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander careers

Attracting, supporting, developing and retaining skilled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees is critical to supporting the PC’s inquiries, research, reporting, review, policy and engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Careers at the PC

The PC provides independent, evidence-based advice to the Australian Government on the major economic, social and environmental issues facing our nation. Our research spans a broad range of policy areas; from supporting climate change to managing the net zero transition, from sustainably managing our water resources, to improving our health and education systems. Our work is based on evidence, underpinned by our analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, and input from businesses, academia and communities.

The PC also has responsibilities under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap (the Agreement) to:

  • administer the Closing the Gap (CtG) Information Repository and Annual Data Compilation Report. The CtG dashboard provides the most up-to-date information available on the targets and indicators in the Agreement, and the Annual Data Compilation Report provides a point-in-time snapshot of the dashboard material
  • undertake a comprehensive review of progress of the Agreement every three years. The review informs the ongoing implementation of the Agreement by state and territory governments by highlighting areas of improvement and emphasising where additional effort is needed to close the gap.

PC office locations

Our two main offices are located on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation in Melbourne, and the Ngambri and Ngunnawal peoples in Canberra. The PC also has colleagues who live and work on many other lands of Aboriginal Nations across Australia.

How can the PC support me

We value the contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples make as employees of the PC. We recognise the importance of attracting, developing and retaining Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent across our organisation.

Through our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and Inclusion and Diversity Strategy, we are taking practical action to create a culturally safe, inclusive and supportive workplace. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees have access to cultural and ceremonial leave, including leave to participate in NAIDOC Week activities, and are supported by our Reconciliation and Indigenous Champions.

The PC is committed to advancing reconciliation and increasing representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within our workforce, ensuring our organisation better reflects the diverse communities and peoples we engage with and serve.

Affirmative measures - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment

We are committed to increasing the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees. We do this by:

  • applying an affirmative measure to some of our recruitment processes
  • offering Aurora internships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

If we apply an affirmative measure provision to a recruitment process:

•    the position is open only to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
•    we let you know in the job advertisement and application form
•    we use a competitive and culturally safe environment to assess suitability, focused on the work-related qualities required.

Affirmative measures aim to improve employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They are permitted by the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.
