Closing the Gap Opportunities

The Productivity Commission acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to their Cultures, Country and Elders past and present.

About us

The Productivity Commission helps governments make better policies in the long-term interest of all Australians.

From 2020-21, the Productivity Commission has a significant role under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

The objective of the National Agreement is to enable Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and governments to work together to overcome the inequality experienced by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and achieve life outcomes equal to all Australians.

Under the Agreement, the Productivity Commission to is provide independent oversight and accountability of progress by:

  • developing and maintaining a publicly accessible information repository, which underpins a data dashboard and annual data report.
  • undertaking an independent review of progress every three years, which will be complementary to a three-yearly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led review.
