Intergenerational housing inequality

Productivity Commission submission

5 May 2026

To put home ownership in reach for more younger people, Australia needs more houses. But falling construction productivity means that we now build half as many homes per hour worked as we did 30 years ago. This submission to the Senate Select Committee on Intergenerational Housing Inequity draws on the PC's recent research to show how increasing housing construction productivity could help close the widening generational divide in housing outcomes.

The PC provided the submission to the inquiry on 1 May 2026 and it was published on our website on 5 May 2026.
