The SALTER model of the world economy

SALTER working papers

In 1990 the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade commissioned the Industries Assistance Commission to develop a global trade model. The model was named SALTER (Sectoral Analysis of Liberalising Trade in the East Asian Region) after the distinguished Australian economist Wilfred Salter.

A version of the SALTER model - the WEDGE model - was developed to analyse the Costs and Benefits of Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Industry Commission Inquiry Report).

The SALTER model played an important part in the subsequent development of the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) model. Many of the tools that were developed for the SALTER project are critical to this day to the production of the GTAP database.

The following papers constitute the entire SALTER library, including the final model documentation (Jomini et al, 1994), several prior versions and the many utilities and inputs into building SALTER.
