Fabricated structural steel safeguards

The PC published a paper to assist people to prepare an initial submission. The paper set out the key questions the PC considered early in this inquiry and the process it will follow.

The paper was released on 24 February 2026.

The PC welcomed submissions from all interested parties and the general public, including submissions that identify reliable sources of data that could inform our analysis.

Submissions were due by 20 April 2026.

In this inquiry, the PC will consider whether safeguard measures for imported fabricated structural steel products are justified and appropriate to protect Australian industry. 

Under international trade rules, a safeguard measure is an emergency action taken where a surge of imports causes, or threatens to cause, serious injury to a domestic industry. 

The application for safeguard measures was made by the Australian Steel Institute (ASI) and received by the Australian Government in November 2025.
