Opportunities in the circular economy

The Commission (PC) sought further information and feedback following the release of an interim report on 5 March 2025.

Despite recent efforts, Australia's progress towards a more circular economy has been slow. This interim report highlights the ways in which Australians are using materials more sustainably and efficiently and the barriers that are limiting them.

It identifies priority opportunities in six sectors (the built environment, food and agriculture, textiles and clothing, mining, vehicles, electronics), as well as cross-cutting policy issues.

Submissions were due by 11 April 2025.

The Commission (PC) issued a call for submissions to guide people in preparing a submission. It set out some of the issues and questions the PC has identified as relevant in the early stage of the inquiry. Participants should have provided evidence to support their views, including data and specific examples where possible.

Initial submissions were due by 1 November 2024.

Inquiry commenced 23 / 08 / 2024

In this inquiry, the Productivity Commission (PC) examined Australia’s opportunities in the circular economy to improve materials productivity and efficiency in ways that benefit the economy and the environment. Our inquiry identified priority circular economy opportunities and advise on how best to measure progress and address barriers.

In undertaking the inquiry, the PC aimed to both contribute to the evidence base for policymaking about Australia’s circular economy transition and to provide practical policy advice for Australian governments.
