The annual Report on Government Services (RoGS) provides information on the equity, effectiveness and efficiency of government services in Australia. This report was progressively released between 22 January and 1 February 2019.

The Report on Government Services is a vital tool in providing information to the community and holding all Australian governments accountable for the effectiveness and efficiency of government services.

The 2019 Report continues this important information provision. There remain, however, data limitations in some key areas.

"To support high quality service delivery and assist in improving outcomes for the community, access to robust and timely data is essential" said Michael Brennan, Chair of both the Productivity Commission and the Steering Committee. "Unfortunately, in many areas, structures governing data release make this difficult to achieve."

The 2019 Report covers a wide range of services for Australians "But for some performance indicators, data continue to be either unavailable or lagged" said Michael Brennan, adding "In a number of areas, particularly in health, the most recent available annual data are almost two, and in some cases three, years old. There is much value in governments working to improve data sharing and release, as shown in the Productivity Commission's 2017 final report on Availability and Use of Data. We hope to see progress manifest in the Report on Government Services soon".

This comprehensive Report covers 17 services, and is being released in seven parts on:

Tuesday, 22 January 2019 – 12.15 am

  • Approach to performance reporting (online only) Part A
  • Community services (aged care, disability, child protection and youth justice) Part F
  • Housing and homelessness Part G

Thursday, 24 January 2019 – 12.15 am

  • Justice (police, courts and corrective services) Part C
  • Emergency management (fire and other emergency services) Part D

Wednesday, 30 January 2019 – 12.15 am

  • Health (primary and community health, ambulance, public hospitals, mental health) Part E

Friday, 1 February 2019 – 12.15 am

  • Child care, education and training (early childhood education and care, school education and vocational education and training) Part B

Releases will appear on the Productivity Commission website at www.pc.gov.au/rogs/2019. The Report is produced by the Productivity Commission on behalf of all Australian governments. The 2019 Report is the 24th edition.

COAG endorsed the review's recommendations at its 7 December 2009 meeting.
