The Report on Government Services is a vital tool in providing information to the community and holding all Australian governments accountable for the effectiveness and efficiency of government services.
The 2019 Report continues this important information provision. There remain, however, data limitations in some key areas.
"To support high quality service delivery and assist in improving outcomes for the community, access to robust and timely data is essential" said Michael Brennan, Chair of both the Productivity Commission and the Steering Committee. "Unfortunately, in many areas, structures governing data release make this difficult to achieve."
The 2019 Report covers a wide range of services for Australians "But for some performance indicators, data continue to be either unavailable or lagged" said Michael Brennan, adding "In a number of areas, particularly in health, the most recent available annual data are almost two, and in some cases three, years old. There is much value in governments working to improve data sharing and release, as shown in the Productivity Commission's 2017 final report on Availability and Use of Data. We hope to see progress manifest in the Report on Government Services soon".
