Stage 3: Assessing efficiency and competitiveness

Public inquiry

This inquiry is now completed. The Australian Government asked the Productivity Commission to undertake a 12-month inquiry into the efficiency and competitiveness of Australia's superannuation system. This represented the third stage of the Commission's review of the Efficiency and Competitiveness of Australia's superannuation system.

The final report was handed to the Australian Government on 21 December 2018 and publicly released on 10 January 2019.

The inquiry was required to assess whether Australia's superannuation system is efficient and competitive and to make recommendations to improve outcomes for members and system stability, and to reduce barriers to the efficiency and competitiveness of the system.

The assessment was based on the five system level objectives, 22 assessment criteria, and 89 corresponding indicators set out in the Commission's stage 1 report and informed by the findings from the stage 2 report.
