Our core functions
Our work is organised around five core functions:
Inquiries, research and advice requested by government
The Government can initiate a formal public inquiry. This takes place when policy issues to be addressed by the Commission require extensive public consultation and exposure. Other work requests from government may come in the form of requests for research or advice.
PC-initiated research
We have a statutory mandate to conduct a program of research to promote community awareness and understanding of productivity, industry and regulatory issues.
Ongoing performance monitoring and benchmarking
Our ongoing reporting includes the Report on Government Services, the Trade and Assistance Review, the Productivity Bulletin, and the Closing the Gap Information Repository.
Competitive neutrality complaints
The Australian Government Competitive Neutrality Complaints Office investigates and advises the Government on complaints about unfair competition from a government business.
Safeguard action investigations
We are Australia’s authorised body to undertake inquiries to investigate potential safeguard procedures for Australian industries. Safeguard action is temporary action that may be taken where a surge of imports causes or threatens to cause serious injury to a domestic industry.
