Public liability claims management

Commissioned study

This commissioned study has concluded. The research report was released on 23 January 2003.

On 26 July 2002, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer asked the Productivity Commission to undertake a research study into Australian Insurers' claims management practices in the public liability class of insurance and benchmark them against world's best practice.

The study was overseen by Commissioner Michael Woods and in earlier stages, by the late Deputy Chairman Professor Richard Snape.

The Commission met with about 30 companies or organisations to assist in its understanding of the industry and claims management processes. It also drew on submissions prepared for other recent studies and inquiries on public liability insurance more generally.

On 18 November 2002, the Commission held a workshop in Sydney to obtain feedback from interested parties on a draft working paper outlining preliminary findings.

The Commission thanks all those who contributed to the study.
