The annual Report on Government Services (RoGS) provides information on the equity, effectiveness and efficiency of government services in Australia. The 2017 RoGS was progressively released between 24 January and 3 February 2017.

Approach to performance reporting

Volume A

Volume A includes an introduction to the Report on Government Services 2017, Statistical context for the service-specific volumes B to G, the Glossary and the Acronyms and abbreviations list.

Volume B

The Child care, education and training (CCET) volume B includes performance reporting for Early childhood education and care (ECEC), School education and Vocational education and training (VET).

The 2017 Report on Government Services is a vital tool in holding all Australian governments accountable for the effectiveness and efficiency of government services.

This year marks the 22nd edition of the Report on Government Services. The Report is produced by the Productivity Commission on behalf of all Australian governments.

“In an environment where fact and data are increasingly optional extras in policy development, the Report remains a stand-out example of using comparative data to encourage jurisdictions to learn from each other about what works and why.” said Peter Harris, Chairman of the Productivity Commission and the Steering Committee. “It encourages improvements in service delivery, which contributes to improved wellbeing for all Australians.”

“The 2017 Report has current year data for most services, but some gaps remain, particularly for health data” said Peter Harris. “For service level data to be more useful for policymakers and the community, we need to reduce the time from data release to clearance by agencies for reporting.”

This comprehensive Report covers 17 services, and is being released in seven volumes on:

Tuesday, 24 January 2017 – 12.15 am

  • Volume F Community services (aged care, disability, child protection and youth justice)
  • Volume G Housing and homelessness

Tuesday, 31 January 2017 – 12.15 am

  • Volume C Justice (police, courts and corrective services)
  • Volume D Emergency management (fire services)

Wednesday, 1 February 2017 – 12.15 am

  • Volume E Health (primary and community health, ambulance, public hospitals, mental health)

Friday, 3 February 2017 – 12.15 am

  • Volume B Child care, education and training (early childhood education and care, school education and vocational education and training)

2009 Review of the Report on Government Services

COAG endorsed the review's recommendations at its 7 December 2009 meeting.

The Steering Committee endorsed the Independent Reference Group's Review of the Report on Government Services' performance indicator framework Report in September 2010.
